Steam & Engine of Australia

Steaming Under the Southern Cross 2006

David Totenhofer, manager of the Jondaryan Woolshed contacted me with this press information for what promises to be an interesting event to be held in Aug/Sep 2006. If you're thinking of a trip to Queensland - this might be a good time to do it.

Steaming Under the Southern Cross
Feature of the 30th Annual Australian Heritage Festival
August 26th to September 3rd 2006
At the Jondaryan Woolshed Historical Museum and Park

If you love Australia, you'll love Jondaryan Woolshed

The Jondaryan Woolshed has hosted an Australian Heritage Festival of note for 29 years, ploughing the field for many similar events that have sprung up in recent years that feature old tractors, horses, shearing, damper cooking, black-smithing, heritage arts and crafts and the like. Some of these new events have specialised in one aspect, such as camp-oven cooking or heavy horses. But none do it quite like Jondaryan, in its authentic setting around the 145-year-old shearing shed, with plenty of other historic buildings setting the scene for some backwards time travel.

For the milestone 30th annual Australian Heritage Festival in August/September 2006 it is intended to have a major feature on the significance of steam power to the development of agriculture, industry and infrastructure. Dubbed “Steaming Under The Southern Cross”, it is planned to bring together over 50 historic Steam Engines from all over Australia and possibly overseas, making it the largest collection of these engines in working displays ever seen in Australia. Steam Traction engines, portable engines, steam-rollers and steam trucks will all be featured, with the offer of four engines from New Zealand. Interest in the event has also been indicated from UK and USA.

This new facet of the Australian Heritage Festival will be particularly attractive to the family, retired travellers and school group demographics. It is also expected to be of particular interest to international machinery and steam enthusiasts, with links forged with the Dorset Steam Fair in the UK, which attracts crowds of 250,000. Strategic marketing into the international and domestic machinery enthusiast niche market will be undertaken.

Steaming Under the Southern Cross will keep the Australian Heritage Festival at the Jondaryan Woolshed at the cutting edge of heritage events, where it has been an innovator and leader for many years. It will make the Festival a truly national and international event on the heritage event calendar, attracting a wide audience, as the traditional attractions of the event will not be in any way diminished.
