Steam & Engine of Australia

Science Works Cowley

A UNIQUE PIECE OF HISTORY RESTORED

The ONLY working Australian made traction engine in the world will be launched on Sunday 24 March at Scienceworks as part of Scienceworks' 10th anniversary celebrations.

The Cowley Steam Traction engine was acquired by Museum Victoria in 1985 and is one of the most significant surviving relics of the Australian steam age.

From the 1870s to the 1940s, steam traction engines played a pivotal role in the development of regional and rural Australia, creating a unique way of life for those who lived and worked with them. Prior to the advent of the internal combustion engine, they provided the only form of mechanically powered transport on Australia's roads. Even well into the 20th century traction engines had few equals on the roads.

Matthew Churchward, Senior Curator Engineering & Transport, Museum of Victoria said, "This unique Cowley Steam Traction Engine is one of only two surviving Australian built traction engines and after 16 years of hard work it is the only fully operational restored Australian-built traction engine in preservation.

"Some 30 staff and volunteers have been directly involved in the 16 year restoration project, contributing about 10,000 paid hours and 6,000 voluntary hours. The restoration has been enormously challenging but a very rewarding project for staff and volunteers. We are very proud to be launching it during Scienceworks 10th anniversary year."

While it is estimated that 600-700 steam traction engines were used in various capacities across Australia between 1850 and 1940, less than twenty of these were built in Australia, with the rest being imported from England and the United States.
