MSTEC invited the members of local clubs and vintage associations to attend a night rally on their show grounds in Ferntree Gully Victoria on 18 September 2004. The first part of the day the public were allowed in and it operated as a normal rally. After the public had gone home it was possible to get up close and personal with the steam engines and stationary engines if you cared to ask. There were some special machines on display and the fixed display sheds have come a long way since I was last at the site. There was no entry fee although a donation was requested in the form of a large barrel with a sign on it. It was an excellent day, with an opportunity for unusual photos of night running. The club put on a fantastic spit roast dinner including desert for only $7.

Gas Producer
Road Chief Gas Producer. These were manufactured in Melbourne during World War II to provide fuel for the nations cars since petrol was almost impossible to get for anything except the war effort. They produced gas by heating coal. The car ran off the coal gas. They were quite prone to catching fire and cars running on the gas were essentially gutless.

Single cylinder car
A very cool single cylinder car. This was driven to the rally ground under its own power. It is surprisingly speedy considering the low horsepower available. It is almost totally silent.

Raising Steam
Raising steam on what was once the club locomotive offering rides to kids. The train is not able to be insured these days so only its owner/driver gets to ride.

Tank Engine
This engine is from a tank. Amazingly loud - overpowers every other sound around the grounds while running!
