Refueling Your Engine

Always stop your engine before refueling. You should use either a metal fuel can or a conductive plastic can - don't use any can not designed for fuel. The can should have both a nozzle and an air intake. I like the kind which also have a filter.

Know where a fire extingisher is
Put out that cigarette if you smoke
Stop the engine
Give the engine a quick check, loose parts, loose flywheels
Close the fuel valve at the tank - especially if you have gravity feed
Open the fuel tank
Open the fuel can
Fill the tank to the desired level (I usually fill to about two thirds)
Close the fuel can
Close the fuel tank and wipe down
Open the fuel valve
Restart the engine

I try to keep my fuel can somewhere cool, and if it is a hot day I vent it from time to time to stop it bursting - do this carefully and pay attention to the people around you (eg. smokers) as the vapour which escapes is very flammable.

You should not that many shows have rules about refueling - check on the day and obey.
