Stationary Engine Dictionary/Glossary

Term Popular Meaning
oiler a cup made of glass or metal which contains oil, the oil is slowly drip fed to the part of the machine requiring lubrication
shim stock the results of consuming assorted drinks (generally beer :-) in aluminium cans
swap meet an event where engine fanatics get together to swap, sell, and buy engines and engine parts known as an "auto jumble" in UK
transporter see truck
truck a sturdy wood or steel trolley with four wheels and a draw bar onto which an engine is mounted for ease of transportation

Igniter an ignition apparatus that uses a set of movable points inside the
combustion chamber instead of a spark plug.
Make n Break same as igniter , the points close (make)and then open(break)
just at the moment of ignition , generating a spark
hi tension Magneto a mag capable of generating enough current to jump the
gap of a spark plug (Wico ek)
Low tension Magneto low current mag used with an igniter , the points
open just as the current is delivered so they don't need to jump the gap , just
make a little spark (Webster)
Skids wooden platform bolted the the base of your engine
Hopper Cooled an engine with a open top tank on top of the cylinder to
hold the cooling water
Tank Cooled with an enclosed ,external tank to hold the
cooling water ,circulated by convection or a small pump
Screen cooled The water is pumped to an open tank and
allowed to run over a screen wire cone and then into the tank this allows for
efficient cooling
Trailer Chaser More precisely a "dealer " who hangs around
the gate at a big show with a walkie talkie and a three wheeler , chasing
everything down and buying all the "junk" as it shows up
Hit n Miss A governor system wherein the exhaust valve is locked open and
the ignition shut off till the engine slows down (characterised by the sound it
makes ie Huff huff huff huff huff huff huff huff huff kadinkCHOFFF !
Throttle Governed system that maintains engine speed by open or closing a
throttle lever in the carb (these engines hit every time) pop pop pop pop pop
pop
Side shaft an engine that has a rotating shaft driven by a bevel gear off
the crank it runs parallel to the cylinder and has the exhaust cam and the
igniter trip at its tip near the cylinder head
open crank an engine wherein the crankshaft .connecting rod and cylinder
are completely exposed to the ravages of the elements and curious little
fingers
enclosed crank a more modern design wherein everything is enclosed inside
the block casting
Mixer a very early type of "carb" it consists of little more than a
simple tube with a small needle valve to adjust fuel mixture
Carburetor French for "don't mess with it !!!"
