A homesick Ruston Hornsby 3hp
This is a Ruston & Hornsby 3bhp type "S.P.B." engine beautifully restored by Ken Evans. What is so unusual about this engine that it gets a page on its own? Well, it was found derelict and restored thousands of kilometres from home in the USA.
The engine was built in Perth, WA, in 1941 by HARRIS, SCARFE & SANDOVERS, LTD. (by arrangement with Ruston & Hornsby, Ltd. of Lincoln, England). It's serial number is S1033. The engine has a closed crankcase and is splash oiled. It was originally supplied with the unusual configuration of V-belt pulleys on each flywheel instead of the usual flat belt pulley. Ken bought this engine from a friend who bought it 10 to 15 years ago from some one near San Francisco. The brothers have absolutely no idea how or when this engine came to California and would dearly like to hear from anyone who might be able to provide some clues, particularly when it was shipped to the US.
Lawrence has promised :-) to fill us in with the restoration story regarding this magnificent engine in the near future. Congratulations on a job well done to two brothers!
A quick update on the Ruston and Hornsby. As of the night of Saturday April 13th the engine has been running at least ten hours a day for the last 14 days with absolutely no maintenance or adjustments needed. Not even spark plug cleaning. Everyone in our club remarks what a nice running engine this is. Many comments on how smooth it runs. No vibration, no bouncing up and down, etc.Ken and Lawrence would like to hear from anyone who knows of any other Australian engines which have found a home in the US. The second image is of Ken and the RH.
Ken wrote an outstanding article for GEM. The article details the complete restoration story and is reproduced on Steam & Engine with his permission.
