Steam & Engine of Australia

Economy Drag Saw

This Economy Drag Saw was seen at the 2001 Portland Indiana (USA) show. It belongs to Keith Kinney who should be congratulated on the magnificent condition of his saw. Obviously some hard work went into this restoration.

I don't have much detail on this engine or the saw. It is interesting to note the differences between the Australian design (eg. Rosebery) and the USA influence. Both designs are very simple which makes them reliable.

Note how most of the frame construction is wood with cast iron parts to guide and control the saw.

The saw is driven by an endless chain. I'm guessing but it looks like about a 10 to 1 reduction between engine speed and saw speed. When actually working the Economy would operate at about 1,000 RPM so the saw would make about 100 strokes per minute.
