Stover Drag Saw InstructionsThe Stover Manufacturing and Engine Company of the USA (marketed under the Cooper brand in Australia) made many models of engine. Some of them the K and CT range in particular came in drag saw form. The remainder of this article is a reproduction of the text from the Type K Engine Instructions for Operating Stover No. 802 Drag Saw.Before starting to operate, read these directions carefullly; also the instructions for operating the engine. Also see that all bolts and nuts are tight and all grease cups and oilers are filled, and all moving parts well lubricated. The Stover No. 802 Drag Saw can be used for sawing logs, also for felling trees if tree felling attachment is used. The outfit ships from the factory as a log saw only or with tree felling attachment as ordered. If the tree felling attachment is shipped with the log saw some parts of tree saw are attached in place for convenience in shipping. Before operating as a log saw, remove the large wood block from saw end of freame, this is used for tree saw only. The iron cross bar or chain guide next to the wood block, and the rtatcher frame between the wood frame need not be removed unless desired.
TO OPERATE AS A LOG SAWSee that pitman is set on long stroke of gear. Bolt saw blade to crosshead with cap screws found in crosshead, noting that saw blade is inserted in slot in wooden saw guide.Loosen the bolts which fasten the axle skeins to the axle and remove the bolts farthest from the wheels. Swing the wheels around at right angles until both wheels are in line, then replace bolts and tighten. See that all bolts are tight and all moving parts well lubricated. A little attention paid to this, often saves expensive repair bills. Have Guide Bracket hooked up in hook up lever and locked with pin while moving outfit. Place log points of frame on the log at the desired point and drive one log hook on each side of log below center of log: Place channel iron cross bar with hook bolt and hand wheel over frame above log and hook chain into log books and hook bolt, then tighten hand wheel until log points bite into log and outfit sets solid on log. Start engine with clutch released. (See engine instructions). After engine is started engage clutch. Then remove pin from guide bracket and lift out of hook up lever which will drop down out of the way. Let the saw down on the log and it will start to cut. When saw has cut through log lift saw up and hook guide bracket into hook up lever and lock with pin. The outfit can then be moved along the log to the next location. It is a good plan to stop engine when moving on log to prevent accident to man or machine. The small chain attached to the guide bracket is a safety device to prevent saw from digging into ground at end of cut. The pin which is used to lock guide bracket to hook up lever is also used to go through this chain at proper place to prevent saw from dropping down. The pin is inserted in hole in top of wood frame.
TO OPERATE AS A TREE SAWThe wheels should be set parallel with engine fly wheels for ease in moving when felling trees. Remove pitman from crosshead and gear, set saw guide in hook up lever and lock with pin.Remove saw from crosshead. Replace the large wood block or end skid with iron peg on end of frame, also ratchet frame and chain guide if they were removed. Place rocker arm under frame and attach to pin of ratchet frame with washer and cotter pin. Connect long pitman with universal knuckles to rocker arm and set other end on short stroke of gear. (CAUTION: NEVER OPERATE TREE SAW ON LONG STROKE OF GEAR). Then attach saw lever to outside hole of rocker arm and attach chain and spring between ratchet shaft and saw lever. Bolt saw blade to saw lever with the cap screws provided.
TO OPERATESet sharp iron peg or. end skid against side of tree and drive into tree, drive one log hook into tree about one quarter way around tree. hook chain into log hook and insert through large hole in cast chain guide at end of frame. Set hand wheel, hook bolt and channel cross bar across frame above chain guide and hook chain into hook bolt, tighten hand wheel until outfit is tight against tree. After starting engine tighten ratchet until enough spring tension is against saw to feed saw into tree, tighten ratchet from time to time as needed to keep saw feeding. Tree should be wedged as soon as saw has fed in far enough, to prevent cramping of saw.
Saw should be stopped and removed from cut before tree is entirely cut off and cut finished with axe to prevent damage to saw blade and saw rig when tree falls.
