Wards Sawmill Catalog(ue)

Note: This catalogue is purely historic - I do not sell anything - please don't join the long line of people who ask me to supply items you see here!
The following article is a reproduction of a Wards Sawmill Catalog. The Montgomery Wards company was until fairly recently (2001) one of the biggest chain department stores in the USA and had been in the general supply from catalog business for over a century. Their product range was amazingly diverse, and in this article we'll deal with their range of sawmill equipment.

Wards has fallen by the wayside unable to withstand another economic slump. Note that this is a reproduction of an advertisment for educational purposes, it is not intended to advertise the equipment for sale nor imply any connection with Wards. It is reproduced purely for educational purposes.

18 Mar 2002 - Ken Majeski sent me a message "I believe the wards sawmills at that time were made by Belsaw. When I was a little guy our neighbors had one. They used a 36 inch insert tooth saw. I believe the company is still in bussines as Foley / Belsaw." - Thanks very much Ken - useful to know the true manufacturer.

WARDS SAWMILLS FOR ONE MAN OR A WHOLE CREW

  • Ideal Mills for Farmers or Small Industrial Sawyers!
  • Require Little Power-Even an Old Car Motor Will Do.
  • Sturdy, Yet Light-weight and Easily Moved to the Job.
  • Simple and Easy to Use-Big Capacity-Up to 2 by 24 Ft. Logs.

A WARD SAWMILL will save you money! Make lumber for your own use-for coops, barns, sheds, or the home. Make shingles, siding, walls, floors, or lath. Many save enough sawing for one building to pay the cost of the mill. You can produce finest quality native lumber from farm wood-lot trees, at an incredibly low cost for equipment and operation, even with no previous sawmill experience.

Wards Sawmill can also make you money! Users report earning ten to fifty times as much money as their sawmill cost them. Thousands of farmers are using these mills as their sole source of income. Often a month's sawing can pay for one! Plan your products. Decide where you can make the most money-It may be by selling crating and box shocks to local manufacturers. For some, mining or oil field timbers may be most profitable, as heavy timbers, props and rails are expensive to transport, and users prefer to buy them from-local sawyers whenever possible. For others, railroad ties will find a ready market, and additional profits will result from the lumber produced from the sidings.

Shingles and shakes can be made with any Ward Sawmill equipped with low cost Shingle and Shake Maker Attachments. They find a good market in every locality. Many find a source of steady income from the sale of lumber for furniture and innumerable small articles made of wood. Wards Planing Mill, Lathe Attachment, and Saw Table Attachment enable the sawyer to make finished products himself. There is even extra money in sawdust "waste." Sell it to butcher shops or garages, packing plants or ice plants. Manufacturers of explosives and certain pest poisons want sawdust for filler. It's now being used mixed with cement for waterproof, fireproof structural material.

You Can Start With a Small Sawmill-Add to It Later.

Most Ward Sawmills can be increased in size later if desired. Diagrams on Pages 5 and 6 show how. The cost is low! However, it is advisable to order a sawmill large enough to handle the longer logs you may have occasionally. To do regular commercial work or a large volume of farm sawing you will require a Steel Carriage Model. A Wood Carriage Mill will handle average farm sawing production. One-man operation of the smaller mills is entirely practicable. In fact, they were designed with that idea in mind. With a helper production can be speeded up on any mill, a crew of three or more producing the most lumber with larger size mills.

All Ward Sawmills Are Portable-Easy to Assemble

You make the sturdy base for your Ward Sawmill yourself from the Licensed Plans mailed to you by the factory immediately on receipt of your order. By making the base yourself you save the freight charges and can use your own local lumber. You discover when you receive the Licensed Plans how easily the base is made. You brace it with the steel rods, clamps and bolts shipped with the mill. It is equally simple to dissemble the base and move it by truck direct to the wood lot where the bulk of the sawing is to be done, or even to the customer's construction job if desired. This portable feature greatly reduces the cost of hauling logs or lumber for your customer. The Sawmill Carriage itself comes to you completely assembled and ready to operate as soon as the tracks furnished have been attached to the base.

These Suggestions Will Help You Select Your Sawmill

Sawing Length: Buy a mill with carriage long enough to handle the longest logs you may have to saw later on. However, if you buy a small mill now it can be lengthened when future requirements demand, as explained on Pages 5 and 6.

Maximum Log Diameter. Wards Wood Carriage Sawmills have headblocks that open up to 20 inches deep from saw, with rated capacity of 24" diam. log for wood frame carriage, and 30" maximum for steel frame carriage.

Sawing Capacity (Board Feet Per Day): With the 10-foot mills a maximum capacity of 4000 board feet per day with power feed can be expected-with crank feed, about 3000 board feet. With the 20-foot mills the maximum capacity is about 6000 board feet with power feed--4000 board feet with crank feed. An accurate estimate of output that can be expected from your sawmill is impossible because so many factors are involved. Sawing capacity depends upon:

1-Amount of Brake Horsepower developed at a safe operating speed for engine (usually 1200 to 1800 R. P. M.), as explained on Page 12. Lumber output will increase in proportion to the amount of power used.
2-Type of Food Device: Power Feeds produce faster than Crank Feed.
3-Diameter, Condition, and Speed of Saw: For information see Page 8.
4-Type and Condition of Wood: Very hard or green wood takes more power.
5--Size of Cuts: If you have large timbers, the capacity in board feet per day will run higher than on small dimension stock, which requires many more cuts.

True-Runninq Carriage (first picture) is a rigidly constructed wood or steel framework, fitted with steel rollers to run on steel tracks screwed to the wood base. Inset shows V-type front track-rear track is flat. Carriage glides straight and true without vibration or wobble.

Precision Set Works (next two pictures)-These "thickness adjusters" are operated by a convenient hand lever, and adjust log to exact position desired. Eve. thin veneers can be sawed-set works allow adjustments of cut as fine as 1/16th inch thickness! Only on sawmills costing many times as much will you find such accuracy and fineness. Every Ward Sawmill has two thickness gauges. Smaller picture shows detail of the Automatic Quick Set Gauge which permits the setting of consecutive cuts to exactly uniform thickness. Larger picture of entire set works shows the opposite side of this gauge. Also shown here is the Rule Selective Sight Gouge which permits rapid setting of thickness of cut at random, and is used where it is not necessary that consecutive cuts be exactly the same thickness, The sight rule of this gauge, graduated by 1/4-inches, is easily read. All Set Works Gears are machine cut steel to assure long life and greatest precision.

Heavy Duty Dual Action Top Dogs (fourth picture)-The "log holders" that hold the log rigidly in desired position for cut-Wards Top Dogs are of special patented design. Logs can't wobble-glide straight into saw. When hand lever is pulled, a shoe in the dog-head grips the post instantly and a geared pawl, sinks spike into log. When spike is withdrawn, head does not unlock until spike In loosened. Wards Top Dogs do not tend to push log out of the carriage, a fault common to many sawmills.

Sturdy, True-Running Mandrel (last picture) is a costly shaft of high carbon (.35/.45) alloy steel. Its 1 1/2-inch diameter equals in stiffness 2 1/2-inch diameter of cheaper steels usually used. This smaller diameter permits a smaller bearing surface, cutting operating costs and making Wards Sawmills the most economical mills to operate The large adjustable cast iron bearings are lined with high speed automotive babbitt. Saw runs true, hold rigidly by large 6-inch saw collars. Many buy these fine mandrels for other uses (see Page 9).

Micrometric Load Adjusters (shown more clearly on Page 4) allow hair-width adjustment of "lead" of saw into log--essential to assure a saw that runs true when cutting. Made of cast gray iron. Easily adjustable.

Adjustable Saw Guide (fastens rigidly to wood base in front of saw, as pictured). Made of malleable iron for Wards Steel Carriage Sawmills, and cast iron for Wood Carriage Mills. It guides saw back into correct lead when diverted by a knot or other cause. Easily adjusted, even while saw is running.
