An accurate and efficient high speed Single Surfacer, Wards Combination jointer and Thickness Planer provides for surfacing edges as well as sides---one side or one edge at a time. Gives an S4S finish (surfaced four sides) without the great investment required for S4S surfacers. Other single surfacers, costing up to twice as much as Wards, can surface only the sides-not the edges! Besides doing double duty handling both sides and edges, Wards Planer and Jointer is convertible for many other planing mill operations as both the pictures and list of attachments indicate No wonder it is one of the busiest machines in the woodworking shop!

HOW IT WORKS

Wards Planer will convert the good-profit lumber from your Sawmill into big-profit surfaced dimension stock! To plane, the lower table is adjusted for proper relation to the bottom of cutterhead stroke. Planer has selfaligning chip breaker swung to maintain constant distance from cutters regardless of depth of cut. Planer feeds from end at left in picture---and has pressure feed rollers. Corner screws are synchronized-turning one with hand crank turns all. Coarse thickness settings are made by a pointer from bed to a rule on frame. Micrometrically fine settings are made by a pointer from corner screw to dial calibrated to 64ths of an inch.

To use as a jointer the adjustable upper tables are placed for proper relation with the top of cutterhead stroke. Jointer has swinging safety guard over cutters, and adjustable guide fence. Feeds from end opposite Planer in-feed. Boards can be returned on edge, and edge-surfaced-without lost motion! Production can be made practically continuous when the feed operator has a helper. Overall size is 57x30xI8 inches.

SAWS FOR SAW TABLE WORK

Most planing mill operations are various forms of grooving and rabbeting, the latter being a groove with but one side. All the simpler forms can be handled on the Saw Table Attachment of Wards Planer.

Grooving with the grain of the wood can be done with cutters having cutting edges at rim only, called "common tooth type," and used singly or several side by side to give the desired width. See milling rabbet and groove pictures at right. Order Matcher Set B.

Grooving across the grain of the wood requires outside cutters having also side cutting edges, called "Patent type." Use in pairs of right and left, and when desirable to build up for extra width, fill in with common tooth groovers or plain two-tooth inside chippers. (Page 10).

Knives (top)-Finest special alloy planer steel.

Arbor (center)-Square Ipiece cold rolled steel, machine turned journals. Takes saws with 1-in. hole.

SKF Ball Bearings-Double row, self-aligning type.

Chip Breaker - Improved self-aligning type permits deeper, truer cut and prevents slivering.

Operating speed of head is 4500 R P. M. Auxiliary V-belt drive pulley may be attached opposite saw end of arbor to operate Lathe or Boring Table attachments listed at right.

Special Holddown

Holding stock on saw table with uniform pressure against both guide and bed has heretofore called for two holddowns, usually leaf springs. Wards Holddown performs both functions with but one fixture, placed in either horizontal or vertical position. Roller has spring pressure and is inclined at slight angle, which gives double action.
