SUGGESTIONS ON SELECTING A CIRCULAR MILL SAW

Unless you know definitely the exact size or type of saw you require, the following information will be found most helpful. Using this information and carefully following the "How to Order" information at left will prevent delays or errors in delivery.

Diameter-In general, the diameter of a mill saw should be about two times the diameter of the largest log which will be cut. The amount of Brake Horsepower (explained on Page 12) available must also be considered. Remember that tne larger the saw the more power required to operate it. Nothing is gained by using an extremely large saw unless there is ample power to operate it in the cut. Never use a saw over 40-in. diameter with less than 15 Broke H. P., nor over 48-in. diameter with less than 25 Brake H. P. If a Power Type Feed is used about 10 Brake H. P. additional is required-with any saw .

Speed of Saw-(Revolutions Per Minute)-It is of utmost importance that a saw be operated at the correct speed to assure best service and maximum sawing capacity. Be sure the pulley ratios are cor, rect. When figuring the speed of a saw, never guess at the speed of the power unit or saw mandrel. It may prove too costly in comparison with the small cost of one of Wards Tachometers (Speed Indicators) listed on Page 7. Occasional checking of speeds with one of these Tachometers may prevent a serious accident and costly damage to your saw.

The speed of a saw must always be measured while the saw is in the cut. For efficient operation, the speed in the cut must never vary more than So R. P.M. from the speed at which the saw was hammered by the factory. Running saws at speeds different from those for which they are hammered is the cause of much of the trouble experienced with mill saws.

"Standard" speeds for circular saws are shown in table at right. However, Wards can furnish most saws above hammered to operate at any speed desired.

Wards Resaw or Siding SawsFor Making Very Thin Cuts

Especially recommended for the thin cuts required for shingles, veneers, crating, tobacco sticks, etc., after cants have already been sawed from logs with regular mill saws like those at left. Have very fine teeth! Tapered,

thick at center, thin at rim. Made of first quality chrome-alloy electric furnace steel. Manufactured by leading saw manufacturers, but sold under Wards SUPREME Quality Brand. See "How to Order" below before ordering. Shipped from Factory near St. Louis, Mo., or near Philadelphia, Pa. -2S7 SM 2932-State diam. and gauge wanted.
