Extra Sturdy Construction - To Stand the Gaff of Commercial Work!
Priced for Small Sawyers-Used in Batteries by Large Operators!Suitable even for one-man operation, these Complete Steel Carriage Sawmills are a boon to small producers. Low first cost-economical operation! These same money-saving reasons explain why hundreds of commercial operators have switched to these mills, replacing the large expensive outfits formerly operated. They found a battery of Ward Mills increased production, saved valuable time-and in most cases required an investment no greater than that in a single cumbersome mill. They like the easy portability-easy assembly and dissembly--easy servicing and operation-small power requirements--and greater flexibility of Wards Steel Carriage Sawmills. So will you! Wards Sawmills can be taken right to the wood lot or customer's sawing job.Enjoy these advantages yourself! Select below, the Complete Steel Carriage Sawmill that meets your needs. Outfits listed represent typical combinations proved by experience to meet average requirements. Later, if you have longer logs, sawing length can be increased with a suitable extension or expander unit (Page 5). Your Ward Sawmill can grow with your business! Study the durable Steel Carriage in keyed sketch described on Page 5. The Hand Crank Feed is standard equipment with all mill outfits. It allows effortless feeding of log to saw. Carriage returns 3 times faster than feed, even when crank is reversed at the same, easy speed. This manual feed is desirable where a limited amount of power--about 12 to 15 Brake H. P.is available. This power is within the range of a 4-cylinder Chevrolet, Model T Ford, Fordson, Allis-Chalmers Model B, Farmall F-12 or F-14 tractors. However, if greater power is available and larger production desired, Wards Variable Friction Power Feed or Slipping Belt Power Feed is recommended. If either is wanted, select steel carriage mill from Page 5, choosing a suitable sawing length for your logs. Then order Power Feed from Page 7, Saw from Page 8, and Pulley from Page 9. Order similarly if you prefer a Saw of different type, diameter, or quality from the Wards Superior Quality swage tooth saw furnished with complete outfits. Shingle-Maker Attachment shown in large picture is not included in sawmill outfit, but can be ordered separately. Its chucks are removed during regular sawing. See Page 7 for Shake Maker and End Dogs for cutting small dimension stock, shocks, lath, etc. Wards Complete Steel Carriage Sawmill Outfits include the following: Steel Carriage on Rollers, with headblocks, top dogs, set works, and flat and V-type guide track. Read about each rugged part-on Page 5. Heavy Duty Yoked Mandrel Assembly with 54-in. mandrel, saw collars and nut, steel-yoked bearing boxes, arbor nut wrench, adjustable malleable iron saw guide, lead adjusters, and set collar (or feed pulley). Pulley-All steel with 6 3/4-in. crown fade; for 5 or 6-in. flat belt-10 to 24-in. diameter as required. State speed at which engine will be operated and diameter of pulley on engine so we can send the proper diameter pulley for the sawmill. (If you order a Sawmill without a Saw, state speed at which saw you have is hammered to operate). Belting not included. (See index of Wards General Catalog). Base Hardware-Consisting of threaded steel rods, nuts, and brackets for bracing the wood base which you make from Licensed Plans furnished (see Page 2 for full details).

Sawmill or Steel Carriage only. Wards Steel Carriage Sawmill-And How It's Made(A) Mandrel Shaft: 54-in. long, of costly high carbon (.35/.45) alloy steel-same as used for piston rods. Its 1 1/2-in. diameter is equal in stiffness to 2 1/2-in. mandrels usually used. The difference in diameter saves 153/4 square inches of bearing surface, resulting in less power required to operate. Takes right hand saw with 1 3/8-in. hole. Pulley end has 3/8-in. square keyway. Includes machined collars 6-in. diam., hex nut, and arbor nut wrench. See close-up on Page 4 of entire mandrel assembly, parts A to D.(B) Bearing Boxes: Heavy gray iron, 5-in. wide; split type shims for adjusting clear- ance. Lined with high-speed anti-friction bearing metal. Large oil reservoir. Slotted holes for shifting when adjusting lead; bolts for attaching. Heavy steel yoke connects bearings, gives extra rigidity, and assures a true-running mandrel under heaviest loads. (C) Micrometric Lead Adjusters: Provided for shifting mandrel to adjust lead of saw into log. Cast gray iron, easily adjustable. The correct saw "lead" is essential to assure a saw that runs true when cutting, --ka (D) Adjustable Saw Guide: Steadies the saw, reduces weaving. Guides saw back into correct lead when diverted by a knot or other cause. Malleable iron. Special design permits adjustment while saw is running. Bolts rigidly to wood base. (E) Head Block: Fence type, of 11/2x3/16-in. steel angles, with malleable iron stanchions. Hold-down shoe prevents headblock from lifting when top dog presses into log. (F) Top Dogs: Special heavy duty dual action type. Hold log rigidly in desired position for cut. When hand lever is pulled, a shoe in the dog-head grips the stanchion instantly, and simultaneously a geared pawl sinks the spike in log. When spike is withdrawn, head does not unlock from post until spike is loosened. Head is adjustable to four positions-for all requirements from large log to final board. Close-up on Page 4. (G) Precision Set Works: For adjusting thickness of cut. Even thin veneer 1/16th inch thick can be sawed to perfectly uniform thickness. Operated by a convenient hand lever fitted with a pawl which engages a machine-cut ratchet (8 in. in diam. by %-in. face). Ratchet drives machine-cut steel pinions which engage headblock racks. When set lever is drawn back, it advances the headblock toward saw a distance determined by the number of teeth engaged, each tooth escapement advancing headblock 1/16th inch. This distance can be set so that each successive cut made by the saw is exactly uniform width. Wards Set Works give unbelievable fineness and accuracy equalled only by mills costing many times as much. (H) Spring Headblock Receder: Headblock is receded (pulled back away from saw) semi-automatically when desired, by means of a strong coil spring. (J) Steel Carriage: Heavy 2x1 1/2x3/16-in. steel angles and 1 1/2xl/2x3/16-in. channels, electrically welded into one rigid frame, hold set works. All-metal carriage construction originated on Wards Sawmills. (K) Rule Selective Sight Gauge: For setting thickness of coarse and random cuts, where it is not necessary that consecutive cuts be of exactly the same thickness. Graduated by 1/4-in When exactly uniform cuts are desired, the Automatic Quick Set gauge (G) is used. (L) Track and Rollers--Steel Carriage (j) glides on machined steel rollers mounted in holders bolted to the carriage. Front rollers (at saw side) are grooved and run on steel V-type track screwed onto wood base. Rear rollers (side away from saw) are flat and run on flat steel track screwed to base. (M) Metal Base Fittings: Consist of steel cross rods and diagonal rods, with brackets for bracing firmly the wood base built by the operator from Licensed Plans furnished. You Can Select Your Own Combinationi - Even Enlarge Your Sawmill As Your Needs GrowlThe Complete Steel Carriage Sawmills at left are typical popular combinations proved by experience to meet average requirements. (Some of these suggested combinations may be enlarged later with extenders and expanders, as listed below).
