Steam & Engine of Australia

ARHS Vic Museum - Way and Works Collection

The Way and Works branch of any railway offers the most visually interesting equipment. Since most of it is purpose built, often out of something else they often have a terrible industrious ugliness which is somehow visually appealing. The specimens within the museum collection are no exception to this generalisation.

Steam Yard Crane 2Steam Yard Crane No. 2Built in 1929 used for minor derailments. It is hard to tell from this photo, but I suspect this unit was built on top of some hapless steam engine rather than being built as a crane from scratch.
Wrecking CraneWrecking CraneBuilt in 1942 at the Victorian Railways Newport Workshops this crane was used in heavy derailment work all around the state. This is another unit at the museum it is easy to see, but hard to photograph. The only way to get a good photo of it would be to climb on top of one of the other exhibits which is certainly frowned upon.
